The Iraqi Economy Report: An Analysis and Assessment of the Iraqi Economic Landscape (2020–2025)

Given the pivotal role of the economic sector in Iraq and its profound impact across all spheres, the Al-Baidar Center for Studies and Planning has released the “Iraqi Economy Report: An Analysis and Assessment of the Iraqi Economic Landscape (2020–2025).” This report serves as a forward-looking tool aimed at bridging the gap between academic theory and the practical realities of the Iraqi economy. Through this publication, the Center seeks to provide a precise diagnosis of the structural imbalances plaguing the state, such as the near-total dominance of oil rents and the diminished role of other sectors, particularly the private sector. Furthermore, it proposes policy alternatives designed to enhance the economy’s resilience against internal inefficiencies and external shocks.

The report constitutes an analytical roadmap through which the Center warns against the potential risks and threats stemming from total dependence on a rentier economy. It emphasizes that sustainable financial stability cannot be achieved merely through high oil prices, but rather requires genuine restructuring that empowers diverse economic sectors and grants the private sector a leading role. With its comprehensive methodology, this endeavor goes beyond merely identifying challenges; it presents a forward-looking vision that holds decision-makers accountable for transitioning toward a productive and diversified economy. Such a transition is essential to safeguard the rights of future generations and liberate the state from the constraints of unproductive economic dominance. This report derives its particular significance from its data-driven approach, offering an intensive numerical analysis of the Iraqi economic landscape over the past five years (2020–2025), and revealing key indicators and trends across various aspects of the Iraqi state.

It is worth noting that the Center intends to publish the “Iraqi Economy Report” on an annual basis. This initiative aims to keep pace with ongoing economic developments and shifts, ensuring regular updates to data and indicators, thereby serving as a reliable academic and practical reference for researchers and policymakers in Iraq.
