Philosophy of History in Islamic Thought
A Comparative Study of Modern and Contemporary Western Schools
The Baidar Center for Studies and Planning has recently published Philosophy of History in Islamic Thought: A Comparative Study of Modern and Contemporary Western Schools, authored by Dr. Saib Abdul-Hamid.
The book examines the growing historical consciousness in which the philosophy of history has assumed a central position among the historical sciences and, more broadly, the social sciences. It explores the role of the philosophy of history as a guiding and directing source in shaping epistemological foundations, as exemplified by communism, as well as in formulating strategic projects in politics and economics. This role is particularly evident in Europe following the emergence of theories asserting the superiority of the Aryan race, and in contemporary America through the propositions advanced by the theses of “The End of History” and “The Clash of Civilizations.”
Despite this, the Islamic nation, with its diverse national and ethnic components, remains largely unaware of these developments, as well as of the true significance of the philosophy of history and its profound impact on the ability to formulate appropriate social and political systems. It also remains insufficiently aware of the opportunities that this field offers for taking the initiative in strategic planning aimed at achieving civilizational advancement and transforming the conditions of the Islamic nation for the better.
The book thus raises a number of important questions that shed light on issues requiring thorough investigation and in-depth critical analysis, with the aim of uncovering the foundations, dimensions, and prospects of philosophical inquiry into history within Islamic thought.
