Recently published by the Al-Baidar Center for Studies and Planning, in cooperation with the University of Cambridge, is the first Arabic edition of the book “The Succession to Muhammad: A Study of the Early Caliphate” by Wilferd Madelung, translated by Dr. Qasim Al-Asadi.

The book examines the issue of succession, which was intricately and profoundly linked to the internal historical developments of the early Islamic community. It emphasizes that this subject cannot be properly discussed without a deep and coherent understanding of that history—beyond superficial readings or cursory reflections.

Despite the pivotal importance of this conflict in Islamic history, the author points out that modern scholarship has not devoted sufficient research and analysis to it. He notes that this lack of attention stems from the prevailing belief that sectarian conflict—though closely tied to the question of succession—did not emerge until later periods, a view widely supported by many historical sources.
